Since its inception in January of 2004, the Sylvania Police Volunteers has grown from an informal group of seven civic-minded individuals to a highly organized section of the Sylvania Police Division.

By 2007, the program had grown to 26 volunteers, reaching the point that volunteers were assigned to three special divisions, each fulfilling specific needs of the police division and the community.

Volunteer divisions include Patrol, Events and Chaplains. Each of the three divisions is managed by a volunteer coordinator who, in turn, reports to a coordinating officer. The entire program is managed under the direction of the Community Affairs Sergeant.

Our volunteers receive excellent training from certified instructors in the areas of self-defense, fingerprinting, communications, traffic support, computer operations, public speaking and first aid/CPR.

Sylvania Police Volunteers have received Bronze, Silver and Gold Presidential Service Awards for both individual and group efforts. In addition, three have received citizen commendations for actions that led to the capture of a suspect or a crime solved.

Volunteers are currently serving in nearly all sections of the Sylvania Police Division. From giving station tours to assisting with tactical training exercises, our volunteers are involved in nearly all aspects of police division operations. The volunteers of the Sylvania Police Division have truly answered “the call to serve”.

Citizens can join the Sylvania Police Volunteers after graduating from the Sylvania Police Citizens Academy. To become a volunteer, a citizen must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving history, pass a background check with no criminal violations and be fingerprinted.

Volunteers receive a minimum of 64 training hours in their first year and, depending on their assignment, they may receive over 24 hours of in-service training per year including out-of-town seminars through Volunteers in Police Service (V.I.P.S.).
