Safety City began in the summer of 1986. This program was designed to teach preschool children about safety in a variety of situations.

The children spend five days learning safety practices. Each day, the children spend time in "the City," where they drive electric cars and tricycles, and learn to become responsible pedestrians by crossing the street the correct way.

With guest speakers and Safety City guides, children also explore a number of themes:

  • During "A Policeman is Your Friend,” a Sylvania police officer speaks to the kids about how law enforcement officers can help them when they have a problem.
  • Children learn the five ways to look before crossing the street.
  • They ride on a school bus and learn the bus rules from a school bus driver.
  • The children also learn about, and get to see up-close, a street sweeper and snow plow.
  • The Lucas County Dog Warden comes and speaks about the right way to deal with a stray or unfamiliar animal.
  • Flower Memorial Hospital sends two nurses to teach the children about poison safety.
  • The Sylvania Township Fire Department teaches the children about fire safety, and the kids get a chance to squirt water from a fire hose.

The final step is graduation. Parents are encouraged to visit their child's classroom and see what the children have been learning. This is a picture-taking day for the family, and each child is awarded a Safety City T-shirt and bike helmet.

Take a look at our Safety City Photo Page and you’ll see that, all in all, the Safety City experience is one the children will remember and talk about for years to come.
