R.U.O.K. (Are You OK?)

What is R.U.O.K.?

Are You OK? (R.U.O.K.) is a computer-automated telephone reassurance system that contacts subscribers once each day. It’s a totally FREE service offered to Sylvania residents. There is no cost at any time to any subscriber.

How Can I Subscribe to R.U.O.K.?

Interested residents must be interviewed by the Community Affairs Office of the police division. To request an interview, you can fill out our interview request form or call us at 419-885-8906. Feel free to call for more information or if you have any questions about the program.

Is R.U.O.K. For Me?

If you are a senior citizen, you are disabled, or you feel you would benefit from daily contact with the Sylvania police, then R.U.O.K. is for you.

How Does it Work?

When you enroll in the program, we will call you to set up a short interview. During this interview, you can provide us with important information, including contact information for your family, friends, neighbors, physicians and clergy. You also provide the police division with a key to your residence that we keep on file with your information.

The system will call you once each day. When you answer the telephone, the system plays a pre-recorded announcement. If the system doesn't receive an answer, the system will automatically call back a short time later.

If the system receives no answer on the second attempt, the Sylvania police will dispatch a crew to check on you, entering the residence, if necessary. This is why you provide a key to your residence when you enroll in the program.

What if I Live in Sylvania Township?

That's okay. The Sylvania Police Division and the Sylvania Township Police Department have an agreement so that the Sylvania Township Police will check on any of their residents who fail to answer the call.

Why Should I Sign Up For R.U.O.K.?

The system is designed to help us stay in touch with our seniors and disabled citizens who live alone. Many adult children of seniors already telephone their parents daily to check on their well being. This system does the same thing, as an added reassurance.

Who Decides What Time I am Called?

You do. When you are interviewed for the program, you decide what time is best for you to be called. Depending on how many people want to be called at that time, you will be called at about the same time each day.

What If I Go Away On Vacation?

No problem. Just call us before you leave with the dates you will be gone. The system will not call again until you return.

What If I Have A Doctor Appointment?

That's okay, just give us a call and we can program the system not to call on that particular day.

What If I'm Already Using A Health Monitoring System, Like "Lifeline"?

R.U.O.K. is not intended to replace any health monitors you’re using now. In fact, it would not be a problem to use both systems. We do not want you to stop the service provided by the Lifeline system just to sign up for R.U.O.K.
