House Checks

The Sylvania Police Division wants you to enjoy that well-deserved vacation without having to worry about your property while you’re gone. That’s why we offer our residents a service in which we provide additional security for your home while you are away.

Just provide the police division with your address, the dates that you will be gone, a list of any vehicles that will be left on the property and any key-holder information (a family member, friend or neighbor with whom you have left a key). An officer will walk around your residence each day, checking doors and windows, and your key-holder will be contacted if we find anything out of the ordinary.

If you’d like us to check your home while you’re gone, send us an e-mail at house.cks@sylvaniapolice.com or call us at 419-885-8902 to let us know when you’ll be leaving. Be sure to include your address, a phone number where your key-holder can be reached and the date you expect to return. But, there are a few things you can do before you leave …

Before You Leave

Whether your destination is Disney World, Denver or Denmark, there are certain things you need to keep in mind. Making the trip fun and enjoyable for everyone is key; that's what it's all about. But just as important to the success of your trip will be steps you take to make it a safe one.

Preventing crime during family travel starts with making sure your home is protected while you're away. The key is to make it look like you never left.

  • Keep shades and blinds in their normal positions.
  • Stop mail and newspapers or ask a neighbor to pick them up every day.
  • Put timers on several household lights so they turn on and off at appropriate times.
  • Arrange to have grass mowed (or snow shoveled) while you're gone.
  • Make sure all your door and window locks are in working order and use them.
  • Activate your home alarm (if you have one).
  • You might even leave a radio on or put it on a timer. Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway overnight – anything that might suggest someone's home. Don't forget to lock all doors and windows when you leave.
